rainbow burnout quilt
The Rainbow Burnout Quilt was inspired by an illustration by Your Buddy Meg that I scrolled past in late 2020. Months-deep into the pandemic at that point, I felt defeated, frustrated, and exhausted. But the colors in the illustration inspired me, vibrating above the darkness, and they translated perfectly into this rainbow quilt using a pattern from Sew Brainy.
This quilt was constructed with six vibrant shades of quality quilting cotton on a black cotton background. No two rainbows are alike, yet they all blend together into a raucous display of possibility. The quilt is backed in a print by Ruby Star Society's Rashida Coleman-Hale called Broken Ties, which was a perfect reflection of the way my brain felt as the pandemic wore on -- what was once a perfectly organized grid snapped in place and felt a little less pulled together.
This quilt was professionally long armed by Mindy Mounteer of Wild Phil Quilting in a meandering amoeba pantograph using a metallic silver thread on the front and white on the back. The quilt is bound in the same broken grid fabric with the exception of the bottom right corner, which features a short strip of each rainbow color included in the quilt.
