Kona Food Quilt 2022

In 2021, I initiated a collaborative, long-distance quilt project centered around my favorite Kona cotton fabric color, Pickle. You can read more about the Pickle Quilts here. Through our collaborative quilts, we raised over $10K for Second Harvest, a food bank in SE Louisiana providing front line food support to communities in and around New Orleans devastated by Hurricane Ida.

I've decided to make this an annual tradition. For 2022, I've settled on a multicolored palette of Kona cottons with food names for our quilt. There is no inherent theme to this palette other than they are colors I love.

Quilters will have the opportunity to sign up for one of twelve colors and we will make 36 blocks total. Participants will use their assigned color as a central focus of a 12" block of their choosing. To create continuity through the quilt, each block will include small snowballed corners in the feature colors, which will allow the quilt to come together with four-color diamonds between the blocks. Full details about block size and construction will be provided to all participants when they receive their color assignment!

This year's quilt will require specific Kona colors, instead of colors in comparable shades/tones like last year, to create as much cohesiveness and continuity as possible. The Kona food colors for 2022 are:

WHO WILL THE RAFFLE BENEFIT?
This year we will raise funds for community food pantries nationwide. These local fridges/pantries/cabinets are maintained and stocked by the communities in which they are located. They provide people experiencing food insecurity easy, accessible, private, and free access to a variety of foods and personal care items. Contributing quilters will need to find the local community pantry nearest to them that accepts monetary donations digitally and raffle tickets will be "purchased" by way of a direct donation to those local pantries.

SCHEDULE:

  • August 17 — color assignments + block parameters delivered
  • October 15 — blocks due
  • October 25 — quilt top goes to long armer
  • December 1 — tentative start date of raffle
